Mechanical Selection
Mechanical Selection is a video sculpture that scrambles found footage of potato sorting machines into a never ending loop.
In industrialized agriculture, potatoes are subject to a rigorous selection process that permanently changes their shape, away from polymorphic tubers into axis-symmetrical ellipsoids with specific weights and dimensions. The methods of fully automated harvesting and selection influence not only which specimens reach the market, but also the selection of varieties that are grown. Only robust, uniform varieties that can withstand mechanical handling remain marketable. Most of the original varieties are excluded.
